Today I thought I would post the value thumbnail sketch I did before I painted Day 6 and 7 paintings. ( I know, I'm doing this backwards :) ). These black, white and gray studies help me plan out my composition. They are very small, just a little larger than a credit card. I can play with design as I edit my photos and explore different ideas in terms of value shapes and patterns. When the value study works, the painting has a much better chance of success. I love doing these studies. I use grey scale markers- it's easy to get the values blocked in a short period of time.
